This week Mrs. Ament made Lit Circle groups. There are three groups, each with a different book. Within the three groups there smaller groups with a leader. The leader assigns the jobs to everyone and him/herself. The jobs are: * The Connector * The Questioner * The Summarizer
* The Word Wizard and * The Illustrator. The books we were assigned to read are: Love That Dog, Locomotion and Home of the Brave. We all really like the books so far.

Today our fifth grade had our lightning tournament. The boys were Tommy, Jake, Max, Jack, Evan, Arron, Jack and Taylor. The order of the winners was the order above. It was a close finish between the top four. But Tommy kept on making his free throws to get three people out in a row.
The girls were Jasmine, Camryn, Jacqueline, Autumn, Maddie, Tsola, Michelle, Jaiydan. The winner was Autumn.

This week we have been learning about the ancient civilization of the Greek and Romans. We just finished the Greek unit by making a poster. This one is on Ancient Greek Art. We went in groups of two or three and picked a topic by drawing sticks. We researched our topics and created posters like this one. Other topics include mathematics, architecture, Olympics, medicine, mythology and more! Today we started our Roman unit. We watched a video about the ancient Roman times. Some information we learned is... The Romans developed the Greek ways and methods and made them more resourceful.

This week we had our holiday party. It was extremely exciting because we got to limbo, play pictionary & beach volleyball, eat dipped pretzels & drink juice boxes. It was located in the gym & the party lasted from 2:45-3:15. There were a lot of parent helpers.

Math Keynotes
(presentations on the Smartboard)

Mrs. Ament's math class has been working really hard on making their geometry presentations. Now we are presenting them in front of the class and a 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade class. Kids pair up and make a slide show on Keynote, Smart notebook, PowerPoint or Prezi.It was quite an experience. There were some technical difficulties but overall the presentations went exceedingly well.

The spanish feild trip.

This week the Spanish students went to a Mexican store where they bought food and/or drinks (vice versa) Senor Hensel and Senora Klinkner drove the students in mini buses. Most of the kids had bought their own money so they could get what they wanted. But they could only speak in Spanish. The main words we used were : counta questa Spanish for :how much is this lamp? (the lamp part was an example) . Trying to figure out the real part was probably the most challenging but also the most important. Because when your traveling you need to know the price otherwise you won't get it.

This week we had our band concert. It was a lot of fun!!! Every part of the band got there own song. Percussion got holiday clock. Tuba's baritone's and trombones had base band rag. Trumpets had Hak'yo jung. It means the school bell is ringing. The flute's played twinkle twinkle little star. But the concert did not last long with only about 13 songs. It was very fun for all of us to be in front of a crowd. It was also very fun for our friends and family.

Today we reached our goal of 100 items for the food drive.We got 114 items now we get to have a popcorn party!!!The repasentives for our class are max and grace. All of student council had to pick up boxes and bring them down to the office to count the total of items we got for the whole school. Today is the last day to work on our keynotes.Everybody had to do one about ancient Egypt.We all got diffrent subjects for our keynote. We also had to write a paper on our subjects. People have gotten scripts and we have one more full band practice until we have the concert! We also have a food drive starting on Monday the 13th, and ending on Friday the 18th. So far in fifth grade we have been doing a lot of:Math,Reading,Writers workshop,Social studies and lots more.Its the 2nd week of school and we already know so much! in reading we are working on reading to self and reading to someone.In math we are learning about divison, inches and centimeters and much more.5th grade has been going great!Everyone got jobs assigned to them.Everyone had to pick their 1st 2nd 3rd job that they wanted and write a applacation and why they would fit that job.Then Mrs.Ament picked the jobs and everyone does that job for 1 trimester.Then for the next trimester we will be assigned another a job we wanted or not.

This week has been a ton of fun!! We went on the Big River field trip where we learned about the Mississippi river and its surroundings and about Fort Snelling. We spent almost the whole day there...yay!

Specialist: In Spanish we learned about Merridona, the famous soccer player in Argentina and about "De Diez". In Chinese we leaned about tones and vowels. In Phy Ed we played football tag. That's where a couple of people are it and they try to tag the people with a football before they get to the other side. In music we learned a Cambodian xylophone piece and the culture. In art we are learning about color values.

Today is the day after the big river field trip. first we went to Fort Snelling and we went to different station my station was telling the difference from fossils and artifacts then we hiked to the boat and when we got on they took us upstairs to tell us about the different stations. there was crime lab, bird watching , and looking at bugs through a microscope, finding Eco system stuff ,and two other stations I cant remember what the names were. It was really fun!

This week in Diamond Path we have been doing practice tests on Epat. And we are reading are lit. books about floods. Are D.A.R.E graduation is coming up and I am so happy :D. In June we are having a ton of field trips like nickelodeon universe j biz town and more. And on wiki we are communicating with Coalhurst Elm. thanks for reading:D.

Fifth grade during May!

In the month of May we are going to be taking many field trips. It is a l0t of fun for fifth graders and we are very excited about that. But we aren't very excited about leaving elementary school. some of the fun highlights for May and part of June are D.A.R.E graduation, j bizz town, como park, track and field day at Eastview, visiting the middle schools, and Nickelodeon University for patrols. We are very excited for these fun days in fifth grade and we are going to be missing all of the wonderful teachers and friends here!

Free Rice is a website that donates 10 grains of rice for every problem you answer correctly. This is our word study assignment for the week. (the level can be changed after you answer the first problem)

MCA testing is coming up and we are stressed out about it because it's the biggest test of the year but it's a good thing that we are doing pretests to prepare for it. Lately we have been doing reading tests and now we are going to start math pretests. I hope everyone does a good job on their test!!!

For the past six years 5th grade has been going and seeing all of the school programs. The fifth graders always sit in the back because they think we are tall enough to see in front of all the other grades. Us fifth graders already had our program it was at the beginning of the year.

Dear Families,

The fifth graders have completed their written reports on ancient Egypt and are finishing their multimedia presentations. Next week when you come to conferences you'll have a chance to see their hard work when they present their projects.

Important Dates:

Culver's Night - January 27 - the money goes to support the 5th grade PATROLS! We hope you will come and support DP and our program.

Book Fair - the book fair will be here during conferences. On January 28th 4-8pm and January 29 8-8. There are lots of great books at great prices!

GEMS information will be coming home soon! Classes start in February so watch for this in Friday Folder.

Thanks to all the students and families who attended the music program. The singing, dancing and speaking were all excellent!
